Make the most of ChatGPT with custom instructions

How to tailor ChatGPT to your needs - once and for all

We've all been there: you're trying to get ChatGPT to understand a specific context or give a particular type of response, but it feels like you're speaking a different language. Either you take the time to give more instructions and eventually get a response you can use, or you simply give up. Sound familiar?

Well, with the custom instructions feature in ChatGPT, those days are behind us!

What are custom instructions?

Custom instructions is a new feature in ChatGPT that allows you to add preferences or requirements that you’d like ChatGPT to consider when generating its responses. When you add custom instructions, ChatGPT will apply these instructions for every conversation going forward.

By providing specific guidelines when it comes to for example tone of voice, the purpose of the task, the intended audience and other important factors, you can tailor ChatGPT's responses and steer it in the right direction right from the start.

After you’ve set up custom instructions, the days of constantly re-introducing yourself and your projects to ChatGPT are over. You’ll both save time AND get better responses.

Let’s take a closer look at this feature and how you can get started!

Getting Started

Accessing custom instructions

The custom instructions feature is now available to all ChatGPT users, and accessing the feature is super easy. When logged into ChatGPT, just click on your name in the bottom left corner and then select “Custom instructions” to get started.

Setting up custom instructions

Now this step will require some upfront work on your part - but it will all be worth it in the end, promise.

To set up custom instructions, GhatGPT lets you input answers to the following two questions:

1. What would you like ChatGPT to know about you to provide better responses? 2. How would you like ChatGPT to respond?

These are two very big questions - and although ChatGPT gives you some examples of questions - it really is up to you to think through what information is relevant for ChatGPT to know.

Sounds like a lot of work, right? Well don’t worry, I’ve found the ultimate custom instruction template, that I’ve personally used and adapted for my own custom instructions.

Example: Custom instructions for a digital marketer

Let’s take a closer look at an example of a digital marketer to clarify what type of information could be helpful to put in your custom instructions. Kudos to the AI advantage for putting this template together and sharing it with us all.

📢 In case you missed it

Breaking: ChatGPT can now search the web in realtime

Yesterday, Open AI announced that "Browse with Bing" is back, allowing ChatGPT to browse the internet to provide you with current information in realtime. Up until now, ChatGPT's knowledge has been static, sourced from internet data up until September 2021. Initially, this feature is accessible only to Plus and Enterprise users, but OpenAI plans to extend access to all users shortly. Browse with Bing had a brief hiccup when it was first released earlier this year, as it displayed content from paywalled sites, prompting OpenAI to temporarily withdraw it from ChatGPT. If you’re a Plus or Enterprise user and want to try out the Browse with Bing feature it’s: three dots menu > Settings > New Features > Browse with Bing. Then, start a new chat, tap GPT-4, and “Browse with Bing.”

Spotify pilots AI voice translation for podcasters

Earlier this week, Spotify announced they are piloting Voice Translation - a feature that translates podcast episodes into alternate languages, all in the podcaster’s own voice! So if you’re a podcast manager or the host of your own podcast - this is a feature you want to keep your eye on, since it could give a huge audience boost.

The feature is still being rolled out by Spotify. In their own words: “We’re starting by releasing an initial bundle of translated episodes in Spanish, with French and German rolling out in the coming days and weeks. Stay tuned to Spotify for Podcasters as we aim to expand access for more creators and languages.” Read the full press release here.
