GPTs - what they are and how to leverage them in your business
You might have heard the term GPT being thrown around a lot ever since they were first launched by OpenAI in November 2023. But what are GPTs exactly, and how do they differ from the standard ChatGPT chat?
What is a GPT?
Simply put, GPTs – or Generative Pre-trained Transformers – are versions of ChatGPT specialized for specific tasks that can be accomplished within ChatGPT. For example, they can be content generators, writing assistants, image generators, and language translators. You can think of them as unique apps, similar to those on your smartphone, but integrated into ChatGPT.
In OpenAI’s GPT store, you can find custom GPTs created by other users and companies – that are pre-trained and ready to be used (I’ll share some of my favorites further down in this post). However, you can also create your own custom GPTs! To use GPTs in the GPT store or create your own custom GPT, you'll need a ChatGPT Plus or Enterprise account. But it’s worth it, promise!
Why use a GPT instead of the ChatGPT chat?
So why the hype around GPTs? Here are a few reasons to get excited about GPTs.
Ready to Go: GPTs in the GPT store are pre-trained for specific tasks and ready to be used straight out of the box – no need to prime it with information and instructions like in the chat interface.
Versatility: Custom GPTs can be fine-tuned for a broad range of tasks. Whether it’s providing nuanced customer support, generating engaging content, analyzing data, or even conducting language translations, these models can be fine-tuned to meet the exact needs of your business.
Action-Oriented: This is where the magic happens in my opinion – GPTs can also take actions outside of ChatGPT, for example via Zapier AI Actions. In other words, you can create your own AI agent that can take actions in other software you are using in your business. With the 6000+ apps available via Zapier, the possibilities are endless! For example, you can prompt the GPT to send messages in Slack, add a row to a Google Sheet, or draft a new email in Gmail!
User-friendly: Compared to creating a mobile app, creating a custom GPT is relatively straightforward - no coding skills are required! And since you can train it with your own data, give it your own specific set of instructions, AND prompt it to take actions outside of ChatGPT, creating your own custom GPT can be extremely useful and save you a ton of time once you’ve set it up.
